chamath: how did your mom react when she found out you were streaming?

jimmy: you should encourage your kids to have hobbies and do these things, but my mom was afraid of like internet friends so I lied about it until I hit 10k subscribers and she didn’t really understand it.

chamath: how do you get people to move to Greenville to work with you?

jimmy: that’s actually the hard part. it’s typically people who want work to be their life so they don’t care.

chamath: how do you recruit for that?

jimmy: that’s the part I’m still trying to figure out… at some point I need to move.

friedberg: i get the sense you’re on an insatiable journey with no limit. what’s the mission?

jimmy: YT is massive; being big there is now unfiltered access to unlimited people because of YT, Google, etc. I recently started getting into CPG and anything in retail is great; put things on a shelf and people buy it.

on the success of feastables: “I mean like I said, put something on a shelf and people will buy it”

jimmy: we’re spending $2.5M on each video nowadays. i think whatever we upload gets a couple million views a month for — as of right now — forever; they’re pretty evergreen.

friedberg: can you talk about continuing to grow your audience despite the idea that audiences can “age out”

jimmy: there’s no one size fits all advice. we try to make content that no matter what age you are, you’ll enjoy it. we’re not talking about unboxing toys here.

audience Q: how do you maintain excellent execution?

jimmy: you have to find and train top people, obviously. when i first started, all of my people and me lived together and i trained them to see what i see and want what I want and now they’re my top people and they know what i want even when im not in the room.

audience Q: how do you stay humble?

jimmy: i spend most of my time in my studio and i don’t really go out so that 100M number is just a number, I don’t experience it that much.

chamath: how do you scale ideas constantly?

jimmy: i’ve been doing it for 14 years and instead of 10,000 hours, look at it 10,000 days. we take the $$ and reinvestment it into a bigger idea.

jcal: and what about constraint?

jimmy: the obvious answer is common sense. outrage is easy, but what is valuable?
