section: "Education" Built in 1893, GUM operated as a department store until the October Revolution of 1917. And in the 1920s, due to a housing shortage in the capital, the storage facilities on the two upper floors were allocated for communal apartments. Several decades passed (!) - at the time of the closure of the communal apartment in 1953, 22 families lived in GUM. All of them were distributed among other communal apartments.
