The Optimism Network is an extension of Ethereum that allows users to benefit from the security of Ethereum while reducing costs and increasing speed . It is a layer 2 chain that functions on top of the Ethereum mainnet (layer 1) . Optimism allows users to interact with DeFi applications, buy, sell, collect, and mint NFTs, and more. The network uses the OP token for governance, which can be bought or sold on Coinbase and other exchanges.
