Tajiks are one of the most ancient peoples on the planet. A thousand years BC, there were highly developed states on the country's territory - Bactria and Sogd. Later, they fell under the rule of numerous empires: the Persians, Alexander the Great, the Seleucids and the Samanids - and so on until the very end of the 20th century. As a result, the Tajiks only gained an independent state in 1991.
