I've got a Ledger Nano X, works fine, even if the battery died in less than a year so now I have to use it plugged.
Same problem reported by other people too.

What happens if it dies altogether? Can you access your crypto?

If the hardware dies you can still check them on the app, but can't operate with them.
You can import your seedphrase into another Ledger or a Trezor, for example.

Btw you made me check it out as soon as I got home, needed to know if it was still alive, didn't checked it in few months 🤣
