fundamentally i believe French culture believes - the system is unfair and run by elites - therefore, to win one must either: 1. outsmart the system or 2. be part of the elite - both are viewed as bad - being in the elite is immoral, and success, even via outsmarting, is bad because following the rules is good

My French friend said it’s bad not because following rules is good but it’s the success that’s bad because it’s the idea of hoarding wealth for yourself. (Not her position but how she explained the underlying dynamic.)

I’d maybe agree with that, but I think French people would prefer someone who never made a billion dollars than someone who made a billion and gave 99.9% of it away
