Do you see index funds as = self-directed management? I love index funds and consider them a good base. They're not central to my "self-directed" approach though.

I agree. What I mean is that the initial conditions are different than a generation ago. Back then you got a money manager. Gen X and newer started doing it themselves via DCAing index funds. And as you get more sophisticated, there’s a tendency to self direct.

Also Gen X and newer had the benefit of some massive bull markets (especially if we timed the GFC right). It’s hard not to think you’re a genius at investing when the tide is lifting so many boats 🛶 😊
