In 1992 I was working on the Bill Clinton campaign for president. I was 18 and I had dropped out of college to work full time on the campaign. Somehow I got tasked with planning a bus tour (with a Hollywood producer, guy to the left of me in the 🌆) for Clinton / Gore leaving the DNC convention in NYC and traveling for 6 days to St. Louis, Missouri. We were running against a decent statesman of a president George Bush senior and winning was not expected: Day 1 of the bus trip there were thousands of people lining the streets for hundreds of miles with signs that said “hope” — we knew right then we were going to win. Americans are optimistic by nature. Most elections are a referendum on the past or the future.
