The base network uses a sequencer to package transactions and send them to layer 1. The sequencer is responsible for ensuring that transactions are executed correctly. Currently, the fully centralized sequencer role is performed by Coinbase itself, but it has been said that this role will become decentralized over time. Decentralizing the sequencer will be one of the most important challenges of the base network in the next few years.
