I think the biggest reason people subscribe to hypersubs is just like proximity/alignment/support of the creator

Like you see your friend launch a hypersub, yeah of course you're gonna put a few months down on it

don't think ppl really have cared much about getting "value" back

Patronage.

True patronage doesn't exist when you muddle it with secondary markets and "promise" / carrot of a speculative return. 
Nothing was true patronage inside NFTs and even less so with memecoins.

Nouns is the closest to collective patronage i have seen/witnessed so far because of nature of projects it has brought to life.
