One of my favorite stories about how research of customer behavior can lead to success: The Beer and Diapers Story. A major retailer once discovered that beer and diapers were often bought together. After looking into it, they realized young fathers would buy diapers on their way home and grab a pack of beer for themselves. The retailer then placed beer nearer to the diapers, leading to a big boost in sales for both. Have you ever bought beer and diapers together? I sure did.
