The Great Fire of London (1666) On September 2, 1666, a fire in a bakery on Pudding Lane spread rapidly, destroying 87 churches, 13,000 houses, and leaving thousands homeless. St. Paul's Cathedral was lost. This led to rebuilding with brick and stone and creating the first insurance company.
