ppl want u to explain urself before they respect u.
why does Jessyfries have to be a performance for it to be valid?
-why is being that feminine, that playful, that outrageous only ok if it’s art or a joke?
-why does being Jessyfries make people so uncomfortable?
because if i was really like that, it would challenge everything they think they know about intelligence, seriousness, credibility, and power. society isn’t used to girlies being loud, hyperfeminine, confident, and self-directed without irony or apology.
maybe it’s not just a role. maybe i am Jessyfries. or maybe im both the artist and the persona at once. and maybe that ambiguity is what makes my work powerful.
im showing that identity is fluid, performance is everywhere, and there’s nothing wrong with being too much if it’s exactly who i want to be. 7 replies
