The original watercolor painting created for the cover of the first edition of "Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone stone" at 1997 was sold at Sotheby's in New York for a fantastic 1.9 million dollars. With an estimate at 400-600 thousand dollars the price was exeeded by more than 3 times. The artist Tomas taylor, the author of this painting was 23 years old at the time of its creation, he worked in a bookstore and this was his first professional commission. It is unknown how much he has recieved for his work at that time. A quarter of a century ago he could hardly imagined his drawing was destined to become the most expensive artifact of the Harry Potter universe ever sold at auction. This illustration first came up for an auction in 2001. It was sold for a 87 thousand pounds at a Sotheby's in London. Therefore, the painting's price has risen by almost 16 times over 23 years. Who would have thought that watercolor painting could bring in 60% per annum?
