Beautiful, what a fun paper. I think I'll start throwing around that term "theoretical relict" in my everyday life, and use it to win arguments about things like which restaurant we should go to.

The workable solution suggested in the email is to use the "backup wallet" option. In Portis, click "backup wallet" and copy the private key to a wallet elsewhere. After that, I'd consider transferring them.

PSA If you ever had an account on wallet.portis.io : It's shutting down and the last day to withdraw your crypto is one week from now, per email. (What happens to the crypto not withdrawn?) Warning, though: When I log in, loading the balance can take ten minutes, or never happens.

Carolyn Crichton whispersat2am.substack.com Today I write about being looked after. Not in the way I was taught, not by prayers or promises. I once believed. Those beliefs unraveled slowly, and with them, a kind of comfort. Still, something lingers, a sense that the world notices me, gently, sometimes saying yes before I even think to ask. An umbrella offered in the rain. A problem solved before it had a name. A door opening without my touch. I wonder if it is fate, though some call it luck. A collaborator once told me to stop saying that word, that I am here because I work hard. And I do. But I work hard because I know how rare it is to be met with grace, to be handed something kind at the exact moment it is needed. I want to stay awake to it, to keep saying thank you in how I move forward, in how I live. Maybe this is what it means to be looked after: not perfection, not ease, but noticing when life offers you grace, like an everyday miracle, and answering yes with both hands open.

It's so easy to add extensions, and they have the permissions of the user that runs vscode! Luckily, Microsoft checks them, even ones without a ✔️. https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/configure/extensions/extension-runtime-security?hl=en-US I think that a highly-targeted exploit from an untrusted source is totally a realistic concern though.

Something novel for me: A little crypto fee to buy extra farcaster storage. Happy to contribute this tiny amount, instead of participate in a business model based on ads. This better aligns the platform and its users.

I donated to this fundraiser, because I'm hopeful that this app may help a lot of people. Good luck to those developing.

FCC and Diamond lattice. Back when I was working on atomic-scale mechanics theory, it was essential to have a good handle on the 3D structure of crystals. My friend who made 3D printers, printed these for me! 💎 is made of covalent-bonded carbon atoms, two atoms at each FCC site.

Professor of Physics, Mark O Robbins, at Johns Hopkins, discovered how the structure of matter at the nanometer scale often determines mechanical properties of matter at macroscopic scales. Together, we built physics theory and wildly fast GPU simulations to understand some aspects important to designing nanotech machines. LLMs are now trained on the research we published.

My grandfather moved out to California, then helped build the water infrastructure. The local newspaper gave him this honor, one day!
