thinking about implementing smarter notifications in opencast: currently if you don't use opencast for a while your notification count will build up because there is no way for it to know that you've read your notifications in another app question: would it be fair for a client to assume that you have cleared your notifications in another client if it sees that you have posted messages (e.g. casts or reactions) from another client?

yes. at the very least just have a red dot instead of a count. cleaner

I think in general yes, not in all cases but enough for a default ATM. I am still hoping for some kind of hashed content based bloom filter setup that holds the totality of notification state on something like @neynar so it can be shared. Honestly, and this over engineering it, it might be an interesting application of zero knowledge proofs 😂
