if you don't want to do an in-app camera, make your QR codes as ugly (i.e. simple) as possible.

I suspect that lower end devices with simpler cameras means any additional styling or complexity may make it harder to detect. Hard to test, but reading up on QR code accessibility.

Way to solve if you want pretty is in-app camera but even WhatsApp and Signal use ugly QR codes with one.
