Argus Panoptes, a giant in Greek mythology, had a hundred eyes, making him an excellent guardian. Hera tasked him with watching over the nymph Io, whom Zeus had turned into a cow. Hermes, sent by Zeus, lulled Argus to sleep and killed him. Hera honored Argus by placing his eyes on the peacock's tail.
