as a part of my toedipping into @farcaster i’m going to start sharing my Mochi journey reports here. 

Mochi is a team-based coordination game - set a goal, stake on it, earn tokens for reporting (lose tokens for ghosting 👹)

my current goal is 1 commit a day, and i’m using it to learn svelte and build a svelte app

designer pursuing better systems 🌙 cofounder @ Mochi, prev @ Mozilla

📿Day 11
Feeling good. ran sprint planning for team Mochi for the last sprint of 2022, which is crazy. a bit over-caffeinated. a bit distracted since I'm at home for the holidays. https://i.imgur.com/hy89VOK.jpg

The progress I've been making in learning svelte has sort of masked my actual commits. And while learning svelte is really what is motivating me, documenting that journey with commits is important too.

feeling good. a bit exasperated but good

accomplished: I made good progress, created a store, and started dipping my toes into Svelte Discord for help on specific things which has been good. Played with dynamic route a bunch! and got them working - however haven't been able to load content dynamically to those routes

next up:
push my commit, then learn how to dynamically load my content

whats distracting me:
Lots of other goals! and the holidays aren't helping.

feeling good. tons of progress today

success: swapped out my store and got things working smoothly with the dynamic routes! need to get back into styling now

next up: styling mostly - may need to work on the gallery too to display images larger

whats energized me: being able to see my progress so visually

📿 day 14 feeling: good. a little bit unsure given the huge leaps of progress yesterday.

accomplishments: minor styling things, some refactoring, other bits and bobs. Started importing easing in different places.

next up: To stay focused I need to get through fullscreening the sample images on the gallery. probably want to change them from "sample images" to something else too

whats been energizing: being able to read between the lines, pushing through being blocked

feeling: feeling good. tired from skiing and warm from the hot tub.
end of week 3! almost halfway

accomplished: began working on a dynamic component for fullscreening images, but havent quite finished it yet

next up: discovered a weird backdrop-filter bug - also need to stop worrying about styling the dynamic component, need to focus on how to open/close it and how to load the correct data

something that stood out lately: overtightening your ski boots is as bad as undertightening

feeling: pretty good. emotionally full

accomplished: not a lot, its been a pretty familial time

next up: need to take a peek at where i landed last and take a few more stabs at my work this year

distracting me: just trying to tie up 2022

feeling: feeling OK. bit scattered

accomplished: changed tacks from trying to do the dynamic component to working on mobile responsive behavior.

next up: i got sucked into working on the nav mobile responsive stuff and realizing I need to refactor something there. Going to switch back to dealing with mobile work elsewhere before returning to that.

finding a good cadence again, christmas sort of threw me off my groove a bit. skiing isnt helping!

feeling good. found a groove again

accomplished: chowed through most of the responsive work this morning. I'm sure some little things will crop up, but in a good position to handle them quickly now.

next: i need to refactor my nav, it's gotten a bit long in the tooth and needs some more intentional thought

whats energized me: being able to squeeze coding in early in the AM

feeling: having a fairly crummy day, flight delay has meant I'm stuck in CO until the new year

success: I spent all morning hustling to and from the airport so nothing yet. Struggling to get into the mood.

whats inspiring me: imagining future worlds where the goal is complete

Day 20 📿
feeling: feeling good. made good progress today

accomplished: got about 75% through refactoring, ish. still some things i need to clean up

a simple thought: run at the hard things headfirst

feeling: feeling alright. had a nice last day skiing

accomplished: Not a ton of actual programming, but over the weekend I did a bunch more research to sort of challenge the direction I was heading in based on refactoring the nav. Left me feeling good about my decisions but wanting to take some time to rethink some things.

next up: the menu still needs love and so does the fullscreen image view

feeling: feeling a bit busy! preparing for a flight.

accomplished: been sitting on my commits lately - making commits to this project doesn't make as much sense while I'm reviewing the actual design of what I'm doing. I've been re-submerging myself in examples and inspiration to try to get a better sense of what I'm after.

next up: generally, I'm happy with what I've done, but there's a 5-10% missing that needs to be sorted out.

whats holding me back: mostly, being with family and taking time off. Heading home today so time to get back to full-on work.

feeling: not great - had to take Clio to the ER :/ seems she has feline asthma

accomplished: well i got through a bit more research during my stint in the waiting room, did a lot of thinking and designing around it too.

next: need to continue my train of thought and keep Clio on her meds

feeling: feeling better today, Clio seems to have taken to her meds, and is acting perky again.

accomplished: not a lot - i spent most of the day at the ER yday and was wiped out. I did look up some css specs around using position: sticky and pseudo selectors though - but making this demo has taken most of my time today.

next: I have a new idea for the site nav i'm building so i'm gonna refactor things around that.

holding you back: making sure my family is healthy 🤒

feeling: frazzled. too much going on

accomplished: the redesign process has been really fruitful. I've realigned a lot of what I did with a higher level of polish than I had before. still have about 30% of things to redo though

next: Need to push through the redesign, and get back to refactoring

feeling: feeling good. vanquishing demons

accomplished: lots. successful refactor for the nav - started a whole new app to do it, but i think the repetition is helpful so while its not best practice, it's the best practice

next: Need to reconnect lots of doohickies that I lost in the migration, and a couple hanging things from the nav refactor. Probably will dive back into the about page next to keep momentum

holding me back: not alot. other goals maybe, but i'm doing a good job of balancing things currently

feeling: good. a bit behind the eight as I messed up my appointments earlier

accomplished: worked through some silly bugs

next: havent made as much progress as I'd like over the weekend so want to get back in the groove tomorrow. Need to try to quickly catch up the new app with my old one

energizing me: seeing my progress as it happens

feeling: a bit beatdown - had a busy end of day

accomplished: not a ton - some really basic fiddling this morning but took on other goals instead (which was good just not good for my motivation on this goal)

next: tomorrow is gonna be as much dedicated to this goal as possible

accomplished: lots of reworking the new app, stamped out some filter performance things. kind of broad progress thats hard to pin down, which means it wasnt that focused

accomplished: finished the top level pages! and a bit more. still some things i need to dial in but mostly set

feeling: tired. kinda beat from today

accomplished: i spent a lot of time trying to figure out passing up the chain despite having done it before. i needed to take a step back though and focused on other projects instead, which made me feel better

next: I still need to solve this so tomorrow its first up. then on to blog pages

inspiring me: the quality of the work i've done really makes me happy.

accomplished: i figured out my stupid state problem

feeling: great. making big progress

accomplished: got dynamic routes sorted this morning, had a dumb hiccup with some bracket conventions but solved it relatively quick. Moved on to content now, which is a big step but imported most of my old work in already which is nice.

next: Need to keep smashing out the content now. Need to not be precious and get things on the board so I can start editing more judiciously. I also want to get into some more polish work but i can't let that get in the way of launching. Can always push updates adhoc to make improvements

whats distracting: just the regular suspects - though some of my bigger projects are wrapping a bit which is a nice surprise

accomplished: not a ton - the small things are getting in the way. i need to find a comfortable space to make content proper. I need a good morning cafe spot, or at least settle my workspace

feeling: good. a bit crosseyed from note taking

accomplished: lots of reading and research into writing content for the app. good brain food

next: writing, need to knock through a bunch of drafts

a bold thing to try: applying grip tape

i’m on a team with 3 friends who are working on other things- martial arts, poetry, stretching - but we use Mochi to keep ourselves accountable. 

we’re already two weeks into our eight week commitment.
