In 2017, blockchain projects began using crypto airdrops to promote themselves by distributing free tokens directly to users. OmiseGO (OMG) was one of the first, rewarding Ethereum holders to boost awareness. In 2018, Stellar (XLM) followed with a massive airdrop to attract users. Airdrops quickly became a popular way to build communities and reward early supporters, a strategy still used in the crypto world today.
