John Hammond Tree: This tree is considered the site of the first pardon of a slave in the United States. John Hammond, a plantation owner in South Carolina, pardoned his slave Josiah Webb in 1830 after he told him the story of his family and love for freedom. After this incident, Hammond became an advocate for the abolition of slavery.
