I once worked with a talented but still little-known singer who was full of enthusiasm and ambition. We were recording his first single, and everything was going well until it was time for the final mastering. At the last minute he decided that he wanted to add some new instruments to the track to make it more “live”. We agreed to try, but in the end the track became overloaded and lost its original dynamics. Nevertheless, the artist insisted on releasing this version. When the single was released, the reviews were mixed - many listeners said the song sounded “too confusing”. It was a hard lesson for both me and the artist that sometimes the best is the enemy of the good.
We subsequently went back to the original version of the track and re-released it, this time with great results
