Denver-based Xcimer Energy has raised more than $100 million from investors and the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a high-energy laser system for practical application in a fusion power plant. The startup has set itself an ambitious goal: to create a new laser system based on krypton fluoride that will be 10 times more powerful and 10 times more efficient than the NIF (National Ignition Facility) system, which was used to generate more fusion energy than it took to launch it in 2022 for the first time. The new laser system will be able to generate over 10 megajoules of energy. The pulse will be directed at larger deuterium-tritium pellets, which are easier to operate and release more energy.
