You can spin up a planet a few different ways, probably the lowest friction right now is through Red Horizon (https://redhorizon.com/), or if you want to run your Urbit on your own hardware, I'd recommend looking at Native Planet (https://www.nativeplanet.io/).

That's exactly what I did to start out! Red Horizon can host your planet for you, and when you're ready you can host on your own. I just got a Native Planet box in the last month and am hosting 5 other people's ships besides my own. I'm no dev either haha. There are sub ~$250 NP boxes coming out soon.
