High level goal is to bring Bitcoin liquidity to Ethereum. Personally I look at it as a way to potentially earn yield on my bitcoin. As Bitcoin the chain has very limited expressivity there isn't much you can do to generate yield. On ETH you'd be able to engage in DeFi by doing things like lend your BTC etc. Obviously some inherent risk, but depending on ones appetite it's an option.
