A chemist named Wang Chuanfu founded BYD in 1995 in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, the country’s technology hub. The company had 20 employees and 2.5 million Chinese yuan ($352,000 today). In 1996, the company began producing lithium-ion batteries, which were used in smartphones. BYD founder Wang Chuanfu had the resources to establish an automotive brand and was able to focus on innovation in battery technology, reaching a point of advancement in this field where he could sell his products to other automakers.
