Dump of “fashion waste”, which is visible from space Another consequence of fast fashion is the enormous amount of unclaimed goods. Stock stores don't help; most of these clothes end up in landfills. Every second, the equivalent volume of a garbage truck's worth of clothing is burned or thrown away. The European Commission estimates that EU residents throw away almost 6 million tons of textiles every year, and only a quarter is recycled. And this is still a good indicator. The global average is only 1 percent. Recycling clothes is a complex business. Combined fabrics, accessories - in order to disassemble and process all this, expensive technologies and infrastructure for collection and sorting are needed. That’s why “cemeteries” of fashion goods are growing around the world.
