In 1871, American lawyer Clement Vallandigham was defending a man accused of murder over a barroom brawl. He based his case on the fact that the victim had accidentally shot himself while taking a pistol out of his pocket in an awkward position. Vallandigham wanted to demonstrate this scenario by putting another pistol in his pocket (which he thought was unloaded). As a result, the lawyer shot himself while taking it out. He died from the wound, and his client was acquitted.
