2/8 When I first joined Farcaster, there were only two accounts I recognized from CT: Vitalik and Sirsu. I had heard Diana Chen @treegirl's interview with him on /rehash, and trolled him on Twitter. (it was perhaps my first ever troll actually.) He clapped back btw.

He had already gotten into some controversy with Purple (before my time), and was an optimistic, well-spoken, unapologetic, ambitious founder. Some people called him a grifter, mostly due to yapping about his project but also trying to claim grants. He dared to try to make money on Farcaster, using self-sovereign permission-less crypto methods called *gasp* DAOs to facilitate coordination. 3/8

4/8 I saw members of the Faristocracy attack him, with vitriol levels similar to those you see on CT today! all while saying otherwise what a kind, polite, thoughtful, open-minded place this was. Fine. It's the internet. We are all born free to speak, associate, and pursue our interests.

We actually met in person randomly, at a pre-Degen pre-Frames Farcaster event, back when this was a small enough place that you could know almost everyone. I sheepishly confessed I had trolled him. He laughed (but definitely remembered). An absolutely lovely person IRL. 5/8

6/8 @sirsu: project founder, crypto jobs creator, explorer of novel ways to organize, a cat who marches to the beat of a different drum, not afraid to cross swords and get bloodied in the arena. For a platform whose stated goal is to be the place for crypto natives to network socially, and first to make money, ya had the guy and made technical decisions that helped to drive him away.

Of course, a small group is going to have cliques. And people will disagree, vehemently, on the internet. But I never imagined a place where the tech decisions lean into and reinforce human shittiness with such a practically irresistible weight. 7/8
