<Atonement, 2007> Movies that don’t leave a deep impact or lasting impression are often easily forgotten. However, Atonement, despite being a film I stumbled upon by chance, resonated with me in a fresh way, exploring themes of human good and evil, as well as an impossible love story. The central theme of this film is a scathing indictment of how one person’s pettiness and selfishness can devastate both themselves and those around them. In most cases, people are oblivious to the harm they cause.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Robbie writes a letter to Cecilia. He starts off trying to write a sincere apology, but then, as if he's liberated, scribbles a playful note instead, laughing to himself. The combination of the music, cinematography, and Robbie’s charm made my heart flutter. Though the film stirs feelings of anger, the delicate performances of the actors playing Robbie and Cecilia leave a lasting impression, even after the credits roll. I highly recommend Atonement to those looking for a melodrama with stunning visuals and music. Director Joe Wright’s exceptional mise-en-scène and the beautiful score make you feel as if you’re watching a work of art. While the story is heart-wrenching, the sheer beauty of the visuals and music make this film worth recommending on its own. And lastly… Briony, you deserve divine punishment!

깊은 감동과 여운을 남기지 않는 영화는 쉽게 잊혀지기 마련이다. 하지만 어톤먼트는 우연히 발견한 영화였음에도, 나에게는 인간의 선과 악, 그리고 이룰 수 없는 사랑 이야기가 신선하게 다가왔다. 이 영화의 주제는 한 인간의 비열함과 이기심이 자신과 주변을 얼마나 황폐화하는지에 대한 통렬한 고발이다. 대부분의 경우, 본인은 그 사실조차 인지하지 못한 채 살아간다. 이 영화에서 내가 가장 좋아하는 부분은 로비가 세실리아에게 편지를 쓰는 장면이다. 진지하게 사과 편지를 쓰려다 해탈한 듯 장난스럽게 휘갈겨 버리고 혼자 웃는 장면은, 음악과 영상 그리고 로비의 매력까지 더해져 정말 설렜다.
