"Shelf (niche) for kami" in traditional Japanese homes is a small family Shinto shrine. Kamidana is a shelf hung on the wall, or a niche with shelves, where Shinto cult attributes are placed.

Tradition of setting up such shrines is associated with the cult of ancestors. Typically, kamidanas were used for the prayer purposes of the household members and for sacrificial offerings to the gods (kami). Setting up kamidana in homes was usually affordable only to the wealthier classes of Japanese society. π―π΅
