Engelberg is an ancient town in the canton of Obwalden, founded in 1122, 90 km from Zurich. In the Middle Ages, the area belonged to a Benedictine monastery, which has been preserved in Engelberg to this day. Since the 1850s it became an international balneological resort on the basis of the mineral springs in the valley. At the beginning of the twentieth century, downhill slopes were organized for alpine skiing enthusiasts on the surrounding slopes. The old town architecture and the unhurried rhythm of life in Engelberg give the resort a special flavor. Today this winter resort can satisfy the needs of the widest range of tourists: there are gentle slopes for beginners and steep virgin freeride zones. There is a snow park "Terrain Park" for snowboarding and freestyle skiing, as well as flat tracks for cross-country skiing. The flow of tourists in Engelberg does not dry up in summer: vacationers come here to improve their health in balneological sanatoriums, go rock climbing and hiking.
