Ethereum to me is about mitigating failure modes, especially ones we didn't think were possible to mitigate before. Our task is to always care when "no one cares, until..." If we can raise the floor on what can go wrong, then we can have higher quality trust between each other. I truly believe this will unlock new societal possibilities that are otherwise not possible, like new governance structures and new kinds of commerce, art, relationships, science. In an environment without reliable process, we get low quality trust and it limits how we collaborate. It limits our ambition and it forces us to play finite games. Ethereum's purpose is to enable more high quality trust in our society.
