Tomorrow I'm off to northern Italy for a couple of days, and though this is not a wine related trip, there is a good chance I will have a few wines. So before going, why not sample a Northern Italian delicacy, the famous Valpolicella. Now hand on heart, I have not had one of these in a really long time. I was under the misguided idea that it would be quite a powerful seductive wine. Naturally I was shocked to find it was quite the opposite. Made from Corvina and Corvinone this was a very elegant, light, high acidity cherry flavoured wine with a super light body and a see through colour. It had all the right flavours of course, but the tannin and power behind this wine was very slight. You could almost call it watery. So my question is... Is this the norm? Have I imagined in the past that this wine would have more heft to it? Let me know in the comments below. Ciao!
