Tesla was registered as Tesla Motors in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Mark Tarpening. The name of this company is a tribute to the inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. In February 2004, Elon Musk became the largest shareholder of this company and in 2008, he was appointed as the CEO of the company.
