The United Kingdom is a nation consisting of the countries of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, and is known as the birthplace of contemporary parliamentary democracy and the Industrial Revolution. Britain's global role declined in the twentieth century after the two world wars, losing its empire over which the sun never set. The result of the referendum held in 2016 on European Union membership raised serious questions about the role that the country will play at the international level.
