Shakhtar Donetsk's Donbas Arena has been unusable since 2014 due to damage from the war in Donbas. As pro Russian separatists took control of Donetsk the club was forced to relocate. They played in Lviv (2014-2017) Kharkiv (2017-2020) and have been based in Kyiv since 2020. Despite being exiled Shakhtar remains a top Ukrainian club.

The conflict in Donbas began in 2014 after the Ukrainian government launched a military operation against pro Russian separatists who declared independence in Donetsk and Luhansk. The Donbas Arena was damaged in August 2014 during shelling in Donetsk though both sides have blamed each other for the destruction. The broader war escalated from the Euromaidan protests (2013-2014) Russia’s annexation of Crimea (March 2014) and the separatist uprisings in eastern Ukraine. While tensions existed before full scale fighting between Ukrainian forces and separatists supported by Russiabegan in mid-2014.
