1. Each person is on the opposite side of the river to the other. simply rows to the other side, whereupon the other person then uses the boat to get to the other side.

2. Both people arrive at the river on the ame side. One person then gets in the boat and crosses to the other side and returns. The other person then does the same. This way, both persons have “crossed” the river.
