does being hot carry the look? how much do we actually like the clothes vs the person wearing them? is going to the gym a better investment than a big wardrobe?

Personally I think key to fashion is how well the clothes fit, as they compliment the wearer. That said, a $5 black tee or a $500 black tee will generally look better on a person with toned physique than someone who is out of shape or visibly not confident. Confidence garners attraction!

There's definitely levels to it! I think fit is the most foundational, followed by color. Color temperature is maybe the easiest way to look at cohesion, and skin color plays a role too. There are stylists who help people find color palettes by skin tone, which is why some people really "glow" with certain combinations. Other factors are texture, patterns (vertical lines create an illusion of slimness, horizontal do the opposite, etc), style (timelessness vs trendiness vs futuristic) etc!!
