TIL about quipu, a system of braided knots used for storing information in the Inca era, using variations of colors, numbers, and ordering.

Aside from accounting, these were used by nobility to send messages across far distances. Spanish colonizers wrote them off as rags.

To date, the messages are still encrypted.
