This is such a good question 🔥I’ve actually given VS Code a chance not too long ago, and I think the primary difference between it and Zed is 1. Bloat and 2. Vim mode. VS Code is electron so it’s never going to get that efficient or fast, but on top of that it feels like there’s so much extra stuff in the view. I even took the time to get rid a lot of the UI through various settings, but even then it just felt off. Zed is so much more lightweight, with a lot of features you might need built in which is awesome, including a vim mode. With VSCode you have to install a third party extension for vim key bindings and it’s ok, but no where near as good as zed. That has made the transition pretty smooth imo, most of the movements and patterns I followed in neovim just work out of the box in zed.
Neovim is special in that it has a massive ecosystem and is way more configurable, but at the cost of time to configure it, possible breaking changes, and easy to muck up. 2 replies
