Gall was right before LLMs, and he's still right after them: A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work. You have to start over with a working simple system.

You can guarantee your code is testable by writing your tests first. (TDD) You can guarantee your code is promptable by only using code generated by AI. (PDD?)

When AI agents are writing code for us, premature optimization becomes an even bigger trap. Why optimize by hand at all? Start with a simple implementation. Have an agent fully cover it in tests. Then let another one loose optimizing the performance of the function or service...
