The melody is quite close to me. In the Balkans and Greek the original folk music is similar, largely due to the 500 years of Turkish residence in these areas.

If one goes back to the early Middle Ages in Western Europe one finds that the Music of the East and West were very similar. Tonality wise the west slowly became more 'regimented' in its tonality leading to formalised notation that characterised the works of Bach. Not a musicologist and this is not in depth research, just something noticed after listening to some music from those periods.

Yes, that is true when it comes to secular music. Spiritual music, in my opinion, has always been different. I love Bach, I adore the organ, but also Orthodox vocal singing.
