By the mid-1940s, Pollock was painting in a completely abstract manner, freeing himself from the constraints of the easel and the vertical placement of the canvas, placing the canvas on the floor without direction or posture. In 1947, his drip style emerged, using a stick, trowel, or knife to drip and splatter paint onto the canvas, as well as pouring paint directly from the can. Surrealist concepts of unconscious and automatic painting are reminiscent of Palk's drip method, which is also called action painting. A style that was considered a potential revolution for contemporary art and led to the further development of abstract expressionism.
