In 1912, Schiele was arrested for the “immorality” of his artwork. They found dozens of drawings in his home—many of them featuring female models, some of them teenagers. The townspeople were shocked. Everything spiraled out of control. While he was in custody, one of his drawings was taken and torn up in court—right in front of the judge. Imagine that… a young artist watching not only his freedom but his art being destroyed. But that night, in his cell, he took a piece of charcoal and drew on the wall… A portrait of himself, behind bars, eyes staring into the distance. He later said: “They thought they were imprisoning me, but I only became freer. Because I realized: the boundary of art is not a wall.” And that drawing on the wall? It was the only thing that remained from that time—and even that only became famous years after his death.

Love his work. This one was one of my favorites for s long time. I even did a self portrait inspired by this artwork (in my early years as an art student) What a story!
