can we agree that in this case there should be a way for me to press "join channel" and get to the channel page, then see how to join somehow? 

this here makes users not post, if there's a path from here to potential membership they may.

(I am only posting this, because of product feedback, I didn't send the actual cast to my homefeed, because I want it to reach that location channel)

+1. I usually have to save a draft, go to the channel page, join it, refresh the page, and try to cast it again. Lots of clicks.
I guess many people would just post in others, less relevant channel, hurting community growth.

if the channel goes to public mode, otherwise the UX will stay frustrating.

say a channel is hypersub gated or a short Q&A to be approved manually?

Then one will just be frustrated at 

1) Warpcast
2) Farcaster
3) the channel / community brand
4) maybe even mods if they know them and won't DM for invites

it's generally frustrating for the 99% of users who just want to send their cast

so I don't think public mode is the fix as then the old channel iteration just wins again, which seems to not have worked

This should resolve itself for most topic channels with public mode.

maybe homefeed could be a selection option here too lol then you don't have to "exit" but can just press it

Totally agree with you.

I've had to either uncast my cast or simply cast on home. Not ideal.

Sometimes i have to message the owner, which I feel is a bit intrusive to simply get an invite.
