Four decades ago, American conceptualist David Hammons attracted attention with an unusual performance in New York City. He sold neatly molded snowballs right on the streets of the city. And yesterday, David Hammons' work “Untitled” (2014) became the most expensive at the Art Basel Maimi Beach VIP preview. Hauser & Wirth Gallery sold the canvas, artistically covered with a tarp, for $4.75 million dollars. Eyewitnesses note the elevated mood at the fair and the good sales. Hauser & Wirth Gallery's total first-day turnover exceeded $15 million from the sale of 20 works. David Zwirner Gallery sold 24 works for almost 13 million dollars. Thaddaeus Ropac's booth raised more than $12 million. Those numbers are more modest than last year. Back then, the Hauser & Wirth Gallery received $20 million for just one work, The Artist in the Night (1979) by Philip Gaston. But for today's times, this is a clear success.
