Can anyone recommend any books, essays, podcasts, etc that make the best case for why humanity needs AGI/ASI? Why isn't narrow-intelligence AI good enough? Why go the next step to create intelligence more powerful than us?

The challenge is even if humanity wanted to stop at Narrow AI, how would we keep it from eventually becoming AGI? People would keep making improvements to be competitive. And that's if everyone on the planet is in agreement. North Korea, China, and others would be happy if other countries decided to limit development.

Yea I see why it’s likely inevitable. I’m just wondering about the motives. Ex: Demis Hasabis talks about “solving AGI” like it’s an existing problem rather than a theoretical future thing.
