When I lived with roommates, one of my roommates had a girlfriend a few years younger than the rest of us, who then moved out of her parents house and in with us for the first time.

One day she was the only one home, when a magazine sales person came.

She was young and home alone and he was in his 40s and pushy as hell.

He managed to get into our rented house, and she ended up signing up for like $200 worth of magazine subscriptions purely because she felt unsafe and it was the only way she could get him to leave.

We came home and she was in tears, wondering whether she should've called the police, and trying to cancel her credit card to block the charge she couldn't afford.

So sometimes it works.

You just have to make people feel like they don't have choice without doing anything explicitly illegal.
