I didn’t watch the Olympics this year so strangely knew only of the progress through memes.

Kind of a weird experience

Yes. Just as genres like novels get deprecated in the new online media stew, the linear arc of Olympic sports--this athlete competing in that event against an antagonist in an epic struggle--just isn't watchable anymore. 

Instead it's random memes about this Algerian boxer or that Turkish shooter. 

It's like watching the destruction of collective mind in real-time, one hopes replaced by something comparable (though I'm dubious).

Yeah I found myself agreeing with this even though I enjoyed them. I feel like if you’re younger & online it kind of just makes sense because that’s how you experience most big global events now

I still liked the Olympics but you get the sense that it’s not a world stopping event that means something. It feels more clinical and less prestigious
